svou mladší sestrou Samanthou. Už od mládí chtěl být hercem a díky
podpoře své matky se začal zúčastňovat místních hereckých festivalů. V
16-ti letech se přesunul do Londýna, kde se připojil k National Youth
Theatre a po dvě sezóny s nimi účinkoval, než získal stipendium na
herecké škole
British American Drama Academy. Na konci působení se skupinou si zahrál
tajného agenta ve hře "A Walk in the Vienna Woods". Což mu pomohlo k
malé roli v britském televizním filmu "Wilde" (1997).
Další herecké vzdělání si Orlando Bloom doplnil na prestižní Londýnské
škole "Guildhall School of Music and Drama". Běhěm studia na této škole
si zahrál v několika klasických divadelních představeních. Během studia
se mu přihodila nešťastná nehoda, když spadl z druhého patra na záda.
Naštěstí se mu neporušila mícha a za nedlouho jej propustili z
nemocnice.
Stejně jako většina jeho známých ze studia se pokoušel získat roli v
připravované trilogii Pána prstenů. Po mnoha zkouškách a výběrových
řízeních si měl zahrát roli Faramira (který se objevuje v druhém dílu dvou věží),
ale po schůzce s režisérem Peterem Jacksonem mu byla nabídnuta jedna z
hlavních rolí Legolase Greenleafa. Role Legolase mu byla nabídnuta dva
dny před dokončením studia v roce 1999.
Na roli Legolase se připravoval několik měsíců předtím, učil se jezdit
na koni, střílet z luku a šermovat. Postavu, kterou ztvárnil je
nesmrtelný 2 931 let starý elf s nadlidskými schopnostmi. Celá trilogie
se natáčela na Novém Zélandě 18 měsíců. První díl Pán prstenů 1 - Společenstvo prstenu
"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" byl uveden do kin v
roce 2001.Film se ihned stal absolutní jedničkou, která bořila
statistiku nejen v návštěvnosti, ale i tržbách. Spolu s Elijahem Woodem (Frodo) Ianem McKellenem (Gandalf - čaroděj), Viggo Mortensenem (Aragorn řečený Chodec - člověk) a Liv Tyler (Arwen - elfka) se stali středem zájmu všech světových médií. Orlando má ve skutečnosti krátké tmavé vlasy, ale v trilogii se objevuje s dlouhou blond parukou.
Orlando Bloom se ihned po dokončení natáčení Pána prstenů vrhl na malou roli v dalším úspěšném filmu Černý Jestřáb sestřelen "Black Hawk Down". Druhý díl Pán prstenů 2 - Dvě věže "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" byl uveden do kina o rok později a kopíroval úspěchy prvního dílu. Třetí pokračování Pán prstenů 3 - Návrat krále "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" bylo uvedeno do kin v USA v roce 2003 a u počátkem roku 2004.
Roku 2003 také potvrdil svůj hvězdný status trhákem z produkce Jerryho Bruckheimera Piráti z Karibiku: Prokletí Černé perly, kde si zahrál po boku Johnnyho Deppa a Keiry Knightley. O 3 roky později ztvárnil opět postavu Willa Turnera ve snímku Piráti z Karibiku: Truhla mrtvého muže (2006)
a v současné době natáčí již třetí pokračování Pirátů z Karibiku.
S dalších významných filmů jmenujme historické snímky Trója (2004) a Království nebeské (2005) a v neposlední řadě také film Camerona Crowea Elizabethtown (2005).
